The Citizen Sector’s Guide to Business Planning for Social Impact
Understanding the Non-profit Sector and its Current Environment
This session introduces the non-profit sector and non-profit organizations and aims to encourage youth to gain knowledge, experience, and entrepreneurship to have better perspective on the labour market. While the content has been developed with mostly European culture in mind, we do understand that in other parts of the world the nature of the non-profit sector and non-profit organizations may not be the same. Nevertheless, it is our hope that much of the course content will still be of value to those in other parts of the world.
Addressing Societal Needs and Challenges
Social challenges refer to problems that people have interacting with people in society or engaging in normal social behaviours. We also speak of social challenges for issues at a regional or national level. In this session, we give some tools and activities in order to identify the social needs and to motivate young people to start finding solutions.
Social Challenges and the Quest for Sustainability
Sustainability can be defined as meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The aim of this training session is to deliver knowledge and understanding about sustainable development and the direct relationship it has with social challenges and social enterprises respectively. The non-profit sector and non-profit enterprises are playing an important role for sustainable development through their impact on society and through addressing societal needs and challenges.
This training session aims to draw the conceptual baseline to address social innovation and entrepreneurship as interconnected though different phenomena. The concept of social innovation focuses attention on the ideas and solutions that create social value as well as on the processes through which they are generated regardless of where these ideas and solutions come from.
Business Planning and Managing Resources in Non-Profit Organizations
In order to remain viable, non-profits need comprehensive planning just as much as businesses. This training session explains the process of making a business plan for a non-profit organisation. The management of resources is touched upon as well.
Scaling Social Impact
This training session has is aimed to present the “Five steps towards scaling social impact”. Significant growth or scaled impact has remained an elusive goal for most non-profit organizations, despite all the important work accomplished by them. Many non-profit organizations have remained small in proportion to the social problem that they work to solve. At the same time, society’s complex and pressing challenges call for solutions with a greater scale of impact.
Measuring and Reporting Social Impact
All organisations that work to solve social problems need to see to what extend they succeed in achieving their goals and at the same report the impact do their funders and supporters. Reliable and valid measurement of social impact requires a high-quality and robust approach and it can be difficult for the organisations to know how to go about this, where to start and what terminology to use. The aim of this training session is to provide guidance and resources for measuring the social impact of the non-profit activities and projects.
Grass-root Level Actions
Grassroots actions are driven by the communities and use the efforts organised at the local level to cause a positive change. This training session aims to encourage and give the tools to the young people and youth workers who strive to contribute to their community by taking action and being responsible for their neighbourhood.
